How Catalytic Converters Work
How does a catalytic converter work?
A catalytic converter works by converting harmful pollutants in exhaust gases into less harmful emissions. It is a crucial part of a vehicle’s exhaust system. The converter uses a combination of heat and chemical reactions to facilitate this transformation. Inside the catalytic converter, there are ceramic structures coated with catalysts, typically platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals react with the exhaust gases. During the reactions, the catalytic converter encourages oxidation and reduction processes. It converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, and nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen. This process helps reduce the emission of harmful gases into the environment, making vehicles more environmentally friendly.
