How Catalytic Converters Work
How does a Catalytic Converter work?
A catalytic converter is an essential component of a vehicle’s emission control system. It works by converting harmful gases produced during combustion into less harmful emissions before they exit the exhaust system. Inside the converter, a series of chemical reactions occur on a catalyst surface, often made of platinum, palladium, or rhodium. These materials facilitate reactions that convert carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen gas, significantly reducing the pollutants released into the atmosphere.
