Frequently Asked Questions about Catalytic Converters
How does Catalytic Converters work?
Catalytic converters work by using a catalyst to facilitate a chemical reaction that converts harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons into less harmful emissions like carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen. They contain a core of ceramic or metal coated with catalyst materials such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. As exhaust gases pass through the converter, the catalyst materials trigger chemical reactions that reduce pollution levels before the gases exit the vehicle’s exhaust system.
