Frequently Asked Question about Catalytic Converters
How does Catalytic Converters work?
Catalytic converters work by converting harmful pollutants in exhaust gas into less harmful emissions before they leave the vehicle’s exhaust system. This is accomplished through a chemical process facilitated by catalysts composed of materials such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. As the exhaust gases pass through the converter, the catalysts trigger oxidation and reduction reactions. In these processes, carbon monoxide is turned into carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons are converted into water and carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides are turned into nitrogen and oxygen. This complex process significantly reduces the level of harmful emissions produced by the vehicle.
