FAQs on Catalytic Converter Functionality
How does Catalytic Converters work?
Catalytic converters work by facilitating a chemical reaction that transforms harmful pollutants in car exhaust into less harmful emissions. They contain a core that is often made of ceramic and is embedded with metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. As exhaust gases pass through the catalytic converter, these metals catalyze a redox reaction—oxidation and reduction—which neutralizes unsafe substances like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, converting them into carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. Efficient operation of a catalytic converter is crucial for meeting environmental standards and improving air quality.
