How do catalytic converters work?
Catalytic converters work by utilizing a catalyst, usually made from platinum, palladium, and rhodium, to convert harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they leave the vehicle’s exhaust system. The converter facilitates oxidation and reduction reactions, transforming carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide (COβ), hydrocarbons (HC) into carbon dioxide (COβ) and water (HβO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen (Nβ) and oxygen (Oβ). The efficiency of these processes helps in significantly reducing the vehicle’s environmental impact.
