Catalytic Converters
How does Catalytic Converters work?
Catalytic converters work by using a catalyst to chemically convert the toxic gases produced in the combustion process into less harmful substances. The core of the converter is made up of a ceramic or metallic honeycomb structure coated with catalysts such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. When the exhaust gases pass through the converter, the catalysts facilitate oxidation and reduction reactions. These reactions transform carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC) into carbon dioxide and water (H2O), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2). This process significantly reduces the amount of harmful emissions released from the vehicle’s exhaust.
