Catalytic Converter FAQs
How does Catalytic Converters work?
Catalytic converters work by facilitating a chemical reaction that converts harmful pollutants in vehicle exhaust into less harmful emissions before they are released into the atmosphere. They contain a structured matrix coated with catalyst materials, typically platinum, palladium, and rhodium. As exhaust gases pass through the converter, the catalysts promote reactions such as oxidation and reduction, which transform carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons into water and carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen. This process significantly reduces the emission of toxic gases and contributes to a cleaner environment.
